Iran Piarom (Piyarom) Date

The date palm may be the world's oldest food-producing plant known to humans. Today commercial palms are grown in large irrigated stands. Date is harvested on 180,000 hectares of groves in Iran. The date crop in Iran for all species (dried, semi-dried and fresh) during the farming year 1999-2000 was over one million tons. Iran shares 20 percent or so of the world date production and is the largest date producer in the world.

Piarom (piyarom): This semi dried kind grows in hormozgan area. Color of this kind is dark brown and its taste is unique. Skin of piarom date is thin. Piarom date has a kind of sugar that suitable for diabetic people.

Origin and Distribution:
The date palm is believed to have originated in the lands around the Persian Gulf and in ancient times was especially abundant between the Nile and Euphrates rivers.

Various Kinds of dates are grown in Iran, each with its unique taste and flavor.

There are two main types of delicious and nutritious Iranian dates:
Fresh dates: with high moisture and plenty of sap, which need to be kept in refrigerator or freezer.
Dates with low moisture which can be kept in cool place for long periods of time.

The date palm is dioecious, and only a few male palms are kept; the female trees are pollinated by hanging pollen-impregnated cotton cloths over the female inflorescences, which then develop up to 200 dates per fruit spike.

The single-seeded oval berry fruit, approximately the size of a plum, is golden yellow to brownish red in color and has soft flesh and an inedible stone.

The water content of dates is reduced to 20% by natural or artificial drying. The latter process is preceded by immersion in boiling sodium hydroxide solution.

Sometimes the pits, which constitute 15% of the fruit, are left in, resulting in dates with an attractive rounded appearance; pits may on the other hand be removed, but then dates have a sunken appearance.
